Cadets provide Radio Safety Cover
RAF WARMA Marches
RAF Cosford, 26-27 April 2008
Cadets from 2391 (Parkstone) Squadron have once again provided radio cover for the RAF WARMA Marches held at RAF Cosford. The two day marches are used as the qualifier for the Nijmegan 4 day March held each year in Holland.
Providing radio coverage for the marches held at RAF Cosford has always proved a difficult task as the checkpoints are some distance from the base and always set-up either in valleys or behind large buildings. In the past the organisers have used various means of communications including the TA, RAF TCW and RayNet and mobile phones but have decided that the ATC manage to do a better job than them all.
Following on from their successful coverage of previous yars 2391 Squadron set about providing even better cover this year. To this end a Project Tango repeater was set up on high ground on both days. This provided full coverage of the route using only hand-held radios. Information required by March Control was available almost instantly and the whole exercise was a resounding success. The Squadron also provided an internal radio net for the directing staff.
